Rigpa Field of Merit Thangka

Over many years, the Rigpa Sacred Tibetan Art Team have worked closely with Sogyal Rinpoche & Orgyen Tobgyal, with the aim of collecting, preserving and making available the best examples of Tibetan sacred art. The team has developed digital techniques both to restore and repair existing thangkas and to create new thangkas where no known good examples exist.

Under the attentive guidance of experts such as Orgyen Tobgyal Rinpoche, the team makes new images that accurately depict the descriptions of deities or mandalas found in practice texts.

About this thangka

The field of merit is the focus, or object, before which we practice, pray and make offerings in order to accumulate merit and wisdom. The fact that our practice and positive actions are performed in the presence of, or directed towards, such powerful objects as the Buddha and his disciples as well as many other buddhas and teachers enhances their beneficial effects.

It was a long-term wish of Rigpa to have a refuge thangka designed specifically for the Rigpa Sangha, and so a new thangka was commissioned. The resulting image shows the Longchen Nyingtik field of merit and follows the description found in the Kunzang Lama’i Shelung.

The thangka includes all the great masters of the Longchen Nyingtik lineage, starting from the beginning with Kuntuzangpo. All the lineage masters who came after Patrul Rinpoche right up to the present day, such as Jamyang Khytentse Chokyi Lodrö, Dudjom Rinpoche, and Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, have been included.

The landscape in which the refuge tree stands features many beautiful or significant landmarks: the main pilgrimage places of the Buddha’s life, New York, Paris, London, Sydney, and Mount Everest. Around the base of the tree is the Rigpa Sangha.
