The light of the butter lamp symbolizes the wisdom of the awakenened mind, which dispels the darkness of delusion and mental obscurations. Butter lamps are placed on one's shrine and traditionally filled with butter or other oils, such as coconut or canola, but one may also use a tealight candle.
