“In all my deeds may I probe into my mind,
And as soon as mental and emotional afflictions arise—
As they endanger myself and others—
May I strongly confront them and avert them.”
—from the Eight Verses on Transforming the Mind
Unfortunately for us, our minds are stuck in a shell of ignorance, and we don’t dare go beyond the confines of our ordinary mind. Whereas the infinite space of our sky-like nature lies beyond the clouds of our ordinary mind, we tend to get stuck below the clouds, and become the casualty of our own pain, depression and worry. The teachings of the Buddha are the means through which we can break out of the shell of ignorance, realize our true nature and discover happiness.
We should recognise the destructive consequences of our negativity, and develop an early-warning system, so that we can catch ouselves as we are about to think, say or do something negative. By learning self-discipline, our habits will slowly change, and our mind and hearts will be transformed. If we can learn to stop worying and take care of ourselves instead, we will always find a solution to our problems.
And in those moments when we are lifted out of our negativity and glimpse the sky-like nature of our minds, we will discover a profound answer to our problems. This is the view that we must abide by, and bring to our actions.
