Reflecting on death
CD audio

Munich, 17 May 1996

We are afraid of death because it is the moment of truth in which we find out who we really are, something we have spent our entire life desperately trying to avoid. Reflecting on the ever-present imminence of death is not a morbid preoccupation; it is a way of coming to terms with ourselves.
Two things are important at the moment of death; how we have lived our lives, and how our mind is at the point of death. If we conduct our lives positively, and recognize our fundamental essence through meditation, we can approach death in a far more positive frame of mind. Therefore, we should clean up our mind while we still have time. Serious illness can become the catalyst for profound transformation. It can inspire us to accept and realize fully the nature of impermanence, and capture what Milarepa called ‘the deathless unending nature of mind’.
