These teachings show us how to drop our romantic and unrealistic expectations about the Buddhist teachings and practices. Starting on the spiritual path is a bit like not having washed for ages and finally deciding to take a shower: if we naively expect to get clean immediately, we will inevitably feel shocked to find that more and more dirt keeps appearing. Even worse, we will totally fail to see that we are being purified. A true practitioner can maintain his or her perspective and humour and deal with problems as they arise, without hope or fear. If we nurture this attitude in ourselves then half our work is done, and the rest of our journey will be plainer sailing.
